Impedance mismatching, your audio system may have it. What is it?
Impedance mismatching refers to a situation where the various audio components are not fully synergised. This usually occurs between the source (CD player, Dac, Ipod) and the rest of the audio setup. When the audio system is not fully synergised, it is not fully optimised, resulting in signal loss and distortion.
The Burson Audio buffer removes any impedance mismatching by acting as an isolation platform between any source components (CD, DVD, SACD player, Phono preamp, radio, PC sound card or even IPod) and downstream amplification (preamp, intergraded amp, etc). Burson Audio Buffer is designed to Increase signal transmission efficiency between all components and unlocks the potential of any system.

When audiophiles listen to their newly purchased component at home, they often find the sound quality doesn’t match up to what they heard in the shops demo room. The sonic characteristics that persuaded them into purchasing the machine in the first place have simply vanished. This all too familiar situation, often leads to most audiophiles blaming the remainder of their system for “not being as good as the one in the shop”. The end result is often more upgrades and further misinformed or ill-advised investments.
Many audiophiles are not aware that the performance gap between what they hear in the shop and what they hear at home is a direct result of impedance mismatching between the new machine and the rest of their system. Impedance matching is a complex technical issue in audio. It is mainly concerned with the various types of output stage designs. What makes it worse, is that the same manufacturer can have different output / input (I/O) impedance standards across their range of products due to design change / updates. (See table below).
mpedance mismatch frequently occurs in PC and Ipod based audio systems. Due to their evident difference in operational environments, IPOD or PC sound cards use different output stage designs compared to home based audio amplifiers.
That is why connecting an IPOD or PC sound card output to a Hi Fi system, will certainly result in impedance mismatch. The results are loss of dynamics and texture. The more obvious symptoms include a lack of attack in the music (not just bass, but every single note played), a lifeless and thin “digital sound” and a need to turn up the volume to achieve the same sound level,

Listening to music is a very personal and life long adventure. We know!
The HA-160 is an uncompromising reference class headphone amplifier packed with Burson technologies, Burson refinement and Burson passion. It will cleanse your soul from the daily racket of life and make you fall in love with your collections all over again.
No ICs.
Most headphone amps are built with ICs (integrated circuitry). Listening to an IC based head amp is like trying to listen to a grand concert through a key-hole! With ICs you are missing out on the micro detail that makes music musical and the macro dynamic that makes our hearts beat with excitement. There is only one reason for an IC to appear in audio gear, and that is cost saving at the expense of music!
The HA-160 has been designed with no ICs within its circuitry. Our discrete (IC free) approach allows us to optimise our design and tune our machines to achieve the best in audio reproduction. The elimination of ICs has made the HA-160 far more superior to its IC based competitors - on all front
High Definition
The function of Opamps at the output stage is as important as the lens on a cinema projector. Regardless of the analytical capability of the audio gear, an inferior opamp will halve a machine’s performance, and distort every dB of sonic imagery. Just like our acclaimed P-160 amplifiers, the HA-160 features our Burson HD audio opamp. It enables the HA-160 to reproduce music in superior resolution and accuracy.
A performance focused volume control
At the time when an audio signal is passing through the volume control, it is still at its weakest. At this stage, the audio signal is very vulnerable to noise pollution and interference. A major source of such distortion is the commonly used remote volume control adopted by most manufactures.
Burson Audio recognized the drawbacks associated with remote volume controls and deemed them unacceptable. Instead, we developed a 24 stepped attenuator, constructed with the best quality components available. Our Burson stepped attenuator ensures preservation of even the weakest audio signal; The air between instruments, the decay after an attack and all micro details that makes music enjoyable.
Low Noise Power Supply (LNPS)
Just like an athlete needs clean air to perform at an optimum standard – audio equipment needs clean power to reproduce transparent and natural music. Utilising the Burson Audio discrete (IC free) low noise regulator technology we have ensured that only the cleanest power is running through every component of our HA-160.
Resonance Free Aluminium (RFA) Enclosure
The HA-160 is housed in a 6mm case, constructed from high precision machined aluminium. This enclosure allows the AB-160, to achieve a very high mechanical damping factor, which reduces any microphonic effects, that may degrade the clarity of sonic performance.
The enclosure was also constructed to act as a giant heat-sink, which allows the Class-A headamp to run cooler, and remain optimised at all times.
The Save:
Sometimes called “the save” by our customers, the Burson RFA enclosure is constructed from precision machined aluminum panels. Only 8 stainless steel bolts were required to join the enclosure, which then became virtually indestructible.
Resonance Free:
Resonance produced by nearby speakers, vibrating components and transformers can all pollute audio signals. We took great care during the design process to ensure the thickness of each wall varied from each other to increase the mechanical damping factor. The RFA enclosure displayed superior mechanical noise rejection (internal and external) compared to the conventionally folded steal enclosure used by most audio manufacturers.
Optimizing the Idle Current:
The geometry of the case and the precision of the enclosure allow the entire case to disperse heat evenly, and act as a giant heat sink. A steel folded or thinly built aluminum case could never achieve this. The AF enclosure removes the need for those ugly heat sink fins and allows our machines to be set to a high idle current, which results in lower distortion, higher output and better overall dynamics.

It Makes a Statement
The PI-160 makes the statement, that a properly designed solid-state amplifier is no less musical than any of the valve amps. In addition to this, a properly designed solid-state amplifier has the definition and driving power, that valve amps could never achieve.
No ICs.
The primary reason why most solid-state amps on the market sound less musical and more “digital” than valve amps, is due to their use of integrated circuit (ICs) within their circuitry design. ICs are bad for musical reproduction. They suffer from many limitation due to the fabrication process compare to their discrete counter part.
The PI-160 has been designed with no ICs within its circuitry. By doing this, the preservation of the micro detail, the thing that makes music musical is ensured. Our discrete (IC free) approach allowed us to optimise our design and tune our machines to achieve the best in audio reproduction. The elimination of ICs has made the PI-160 far more superior to its IC based competitors - on all fronts.

High Sensitivity Input Buffer (HSIB)
Fearing for a loss of transparency, most audiophiles are reluctant to add another component to their audio chain. But those who have tried the PRE-160 know that the buffer in fact enhances sonic transparency by synergising the entire audio system.
The PRE-160 has achieved absolute transparency through our patented Burson HSIB stage. The HSIB is an FET input stage that has very high input impedance (hence very sensitive to even low level input). This effectively allows our buffer stage to match up to any input or output signal drains, and realise the full potential of the audio system without adding any colouration of its own.
